New Works

Its been moving fast here at Dash 7! Here’s a peek into some new works:

Architectual Metal Design: A field whose modern definition is continually emerging and refining, pushing the union of industrial design, engineering and architecture. Our team has been engaged on this front, teaming up with Brooklyn-based metalworker/sculptor/engineer Josh Young at Serett Metalworks to look at the possibilities.  Among creating a brand for himself with his methods of finishing and fabrication, Josh created the simple staircase a couple years back and is looking at extending this style and simplicity into other works.  We’ll be working with him on a line of designs merging simple beauty with stremalined(local!) fabrication ranging from furniture to homes.

Germ Warfare: The seemingly endless battle. With heightened awareness due to H1 M1 and other threats, a longstanding project is timing up right. We can’t go into too much detail but we are working towards streaming air silently and efficiently through a treatment process to help keep the risks manageable and cut incidents down in public places.

Optics and Touchscreens: Its an applications race these days, where can the touchscreen provide benefit? how can that be provided most powerfully? Its amazing that one of the first mainstream products to plug into the market has been done so well with the iPhone, and it sets a bar. It also is a blessing from product designers and prototypers like ourselves, one that keeps us from having to teach the benefits of making a product well and taking time to understand its use. That being said we are working toward the development of medical device that can increase accuracy of diagnostics and reducer user fatigue… again too early to say too much, but its great to be involved in this field.

Dash7 sat down not to long ago to talk with mad scientist and general rabble rouser, Ian Charnas(above).  A calm look in his eyes,  hair pushed aside and one sleeve rolled up, he set the stage for his vision with this: a live performance using a 2-Megavolt Solid-State Tesla Coil built like a robot that would shoot 8-foot lightning bolts and threaten to destroy an entire town, while a troupe of dancers and performers with neons that glowed from the field produced by the coil enact the scene around.

Of course we signed on, a few busy months later we have a functioning tuned and structuraly sound coil, that and a few good stories about the comedy of moderate electrocution.

Check it out in action here and make sure to see the show that is pulling together some of the most diverse talents of art and tech this July 10-12th at the Cleveland Ingenuity Festival
